Design Marketing Business Solution What's In A Name?
Applications for Healthcare

There was a time, not so long ago, when establishing a practice in anything other than a professional building was taboo. More recently, we have seen a dramatic shift in new practice start-ups.  Dentists are now searching for the opportunity to have street level visibility.

If you want a new patient to call you, you have to give them something to remember you by. Your practice name must be visible and easy to remember. The name of your practice should be "catchy and creative" or identify the specific geographic location of your practice. Either of these will make it easier for your new patient to call you.

Those of your who have an office at street level have a great advantage. You have a ready-made opportunity to advertise your practice name to new patients. Your practice name should be prominently displayed on the outside of your building, your windows and your doors. People who walk by or drive by your building should be able to easily see the name of your practice. Many practices have a display sign outside their office with the word "DENTIST" on it. This is a waste of money.   A sign that says "DENTIST"  does not give the new patient any information about who you are or what you do.  That new patient prospect will not be able to call you, look you up on the Internet or ask directory assistance for your phone number without knowing the name of your practice. Don't create barriers to entry for your potential patients. Name your practice!

Create a sign that will market your practice 24/7. Here are some hints for your sign:
  • Put the name of your practice on your sign
  • If you have a logo, put your practice logo on your sign
  • Make the text large enough for someone to read it from across the street
  • Light your sign at night and in bad weather
  • Make the font style easy to read from a distance
  • Make the color appealing
  • Depending on available space, include your phone number
Many landlords refuse to pay for your outside sign or the electrical installation costs. Don't let this detour you. Your practice name on an outside sign is among the most cost effective ways to market your practice. Pay for your own sign as a part of your overall marketing plan!

Those of you without a sign at street level need to develop a more aggressive marketing plan that will get the name of your practice into the community. Using internal and external marketing pieces on a regular basis will create the "viral marketing" or word of mouth you need to move your practice forward. A professionally designed web site on the Internet is another great way to get your practice name out to prospective new patients.

Select a name for your practice that is easy to remember. Prominently display your practice name on your building, on your door, in your direct mail pieces, in print advertising and on the Internet.
